New Pedestrian Crossing Lights Coming to Edgar
The Village of Edgar is excited to announce the upcoming installation of two pedestrian crossing light systems along 3rd Avenue/County Highway H. Located at Maple Street and Birch Street, the crossings will help create a safer, more visible walking route between Edgar Public Schools and St. John the Baptist Catholic School.
The Village received a $2,000 contribution from Wisconsin Public Service Foundation to support the pedestrian safety project. The Village chose to expand the project from one crossing to two so that both locations along the route could receive the new lights. We thank Wisconsin Public Service Foundation for its support.
The systems, called Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), will be solar powered and activated by a pedestrian pushing a button. Bright flashing lights will then alert approaching drivers that someone is preparing to cross. The project includes four beacon assemblies, two at each crossing, along with pedestrian signs, push buttons, foundations, and related equipment.
Students and staff regularly travel between the two school systems using the route along 4th Avenue, Maple Street, and Birch Street. The new beacons will make the designated Highway H crossings more visible to drivers.
Using the crossings: Pedestrians should push the button, wait until approaching vehicles have stopped, and look both ways before crossing. Drivers should slow down, watch for pedestrians, and yield when someone is crossing.
